The missing link in the southern bypass.
Queen Anna Jagiellonka Bridge (or the South Bridge) is part of approx.. 6.5-km section of the Southern bypass entrusted to Egis International with a design team in our Warsaw office. The southern bypass is an important piece of infrastructure in Poland: not only does it relieve congestion in the city centre by improving routes across Warsaw, but also links up with the European TEN-T network, bringing companies and people in Poland closer to its capital and the rest of Europe.
With the bridge crossing the Vistula at a wide part which included its right and left flood banks, the designers and builders faced several challenges:
- building the bridge in three independent sections: a flyover for the flood area on each bank (342 m and628 m long respectively), and the main bridge over the river (535,5m m);
- consideration for the area of natural value through which it runs: the Natura 2000 Area of the Middle Vistula Valley, and the Zawadowskie Islands Reserve located next to it.
- geological and hydrological challenges arising during construction.
