Combating air pollution.
The transport network in Greater Manchester currently accounts for more than two billion journeys per year. This figure is expected to reach 800,000 additional journeys per day by 2035 due to population growth and continued job creation in the region. The latter is responsible for about 80% of the CO2 concentrations on the city's roads, with diesel vehicles being the main cause.
The UK government's Clean Air Zone project aims to improve air quality by reducing the use of high emission vehicles.
This regulation will target the most polluting commercial vehicles, including heavy goods vehicles, buses, coaches, taxis and non-compliant private hire vehicles. Private cars and motorcycles are not included in the program.
