BIM, the cornerstone of project engineering.
To reduce costs and lead times during construction phase, Egis and its partners recommended to their client that a comprehensive 3D model be produced for the civil engineering (rebar and inserts) of all the buildings.
This 3D modelling of the reinforcements, tested on the scale of a nuclear power plant, is a world first as part of a collaborative BIM process with the client and the builder.
Guaranteeing digital data continuity
To facilitate collaboration between contributors, the BIM process that we implemented guaranteed digital data continuity from the design to construction and from the 3D model to the manufacture of the steel components required for the ongoing building projects.
Harmonising the work environment
One of the elements that proved decisive in the project’s collaborative management was the deployment of a Common Data Environment using dedicated software infrastructure (Tekla Model Sharing®, ProjectWise®).
This was made possible by using the OpenBIM format IFC (Industry Foundation Classes), which gives everyone working on the project the chance to work on the same digital model, whatever software they use.
In practice, the process starts with the production of the formwork model, designed with PDMS® (Plant design management system) and converted into Tekla PDMS format by Edvance. It continues with the 3D modelling of the rebar in native Tekla format and in IFC format by ICOS, and ends with BYLOR ordering the steel bars electronically through various connected interfaces from the IFC files generated.
This collaborative work accomplished with openBIM earned the project’s contributors the 2019 BuildingSmart Award in the “Construction” category.
Building dedicated teams
New team member profiles, trained up in BIM technology, were needed to define and implement all these collaborative processes and tools. Alongside the BIM Management Unit in the ICOS consortium’s technical division, around 20 BIM experts and coordinators work on the project, ensuring compliance with procedures, model quality and interface management
