Identifying meaningful actions to maximise an airport’s environmental sustainability
Ostend-Bruges International Airport is an Egis-operated airport serving an area of more than 7 million inhabitants within a 1-hour drive. It welcomed nearly half a million passengers in 2019 and the same year handled 25,000 tonnes of freight – which doubled to more than 60,000 tonnes by 2021. With 24/7 operations the airport has a growing freight business, a new ‘cargo village’ and a thriving terminal for General Aviation and business flights.
Ostend Airport’s management team is firmly committed to enhancing environmental responsibility and improving sustainability. This is a complex area with myriad guidelines, measures and potential activity streams. Much of the challenge lies in understanding which activities to prioritise and finding the necessary funding.
Egis was invited to support Ostend Airport in assessing their environmental progress and developing a roadmap of priority actions towards sustainability. The work took place over a two-month period in June and July 2022.
