Tamil Nadu has seen the expansion of its international airport at Tiruchirappali (‘Trichy’) in an Egis-led project with impeccable environmental credentials.
The bustling city of Tiruchirappalli, steeped in history and cultural richness, has witnessed a remarkable transformation with the inauguration of its new Integrated Passenger Terminal Building at Trichy International Airport on 2nd January 2024. Spanning an impressive 75,000 square meters, the building reflects the city's vibrant heritage while embracing a sustainable and future-forward approach. Egis India was engaged as Design and Project Management Consultant for the construction of the new integrated passenger terminal building, elevated roads and all other associated work.
Embracing Sustainability
Boasting a GRIHA 4-star rating, the terminal design has sustainability at its heart. From energy-efficient canopies and LED lighting to low heat gain double glazing units and extensive landscaping featuring native flora, every aspect has been designed for environmental harmony. The integration of technologies like HVAC, water treatment, sewage treatment plants, rainwater harvesting, ground source heat pumps and a solar power plant exemplifies the client’s commitment to sustainability.
Climate resilience by design
Resilience was also a consideration that the Egis designs took into account. In the trusses, hollow steel sections were used, providing both a pleasing appearance and structural resilience against local buckling effects. Box trusses were implemented to enhance the roof's stability against wind and earthquake loads. But visually, the airport showcases Tiruchirappalli cultural richness. Art forms like Koulmn painting on palm leaves and hues reminiscent of the Srirangam temple adorn the interiors, celebrating local artistry. Complementing these are global-themed artworks, symbolizing India's global connections and reflecting a modern, elegant gateway to the city.
Enhanced Travel Experience
At present, Trichy is the only international airport serving the southern districts of Tamil Nadu, providing major air connectivity to the people of south Tamil Nadu, including up to the Kanyakumari District. With global investors actively investing in Tamil Nadu this enhanced facility will contribute to the growth of the Indian economy.
The new terminal is designed to cater for over 4.5 million passengers per year, from a previous 1.5 million capacity. Its layout, featuring 60 check-in counters, five baggage carousels, and state-of-the-art security measures like 19 X-BIS machines, promises a seamless passenger experience. With 60 arrival and 44 departure immigration counters, coupled with lounges and an array of food and beverage outlets, comfort and convenience are paramount.
Commenting on the project, Mr Sandeep Gulati, MD, Egis South Asia said: “We encountered several challenges through the course of this project. The biggest was the Covid-19 pandemic, which delayed progress and also affected specifications and materials availability. But our 30 strong team, supported by 1250 other contractor staff, worked closely with the client throughout and got this project successfully over the line. We are immensely proud of their achievements.”
The new building was inaugurated on Tuesday 2nd January 2024 by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi and other dignitaries.
