As a subcontractor to Associated Engineering, the Owner’s Engineer lead, Egis’ team is responsible for LRT systems engineering consultancy services, in preparation for Design-Build delivery, for the South extension of the Capital Line.
Egis signed a subcontracting agreement in May, 2022 with Associated Engineering for the southbound extension of the Capital Line in Edmonton, Canada. This 4.5 km extension underscores the desire of the Alberta capital to invest in the development of its mass transit network to offer its inhabitants access to sustainable mobility for decades to come.
The Capital Line extension in Edmonton
This project, co-funded by three public financing partners: municipal, provincial and federal, aims to extend the existing line with 4.5 km of brand new light rail infrastructure, running from Century Park to Ellerslie Road in the city of Edmonton. The project also involves the design and construction of a new maintenance depot at the extension’s Ellerslie terminus a light rail line designed for temperatures that can drop to -40°C for several weeks.
The new line will provide services to the residential zone located in the south of the city, a district with the fastest population growth. The project offers a fast and reliable alternative to car transport, while also promoting intermodality with the connection to a park-and-ride facility adjacent to one of the two new stations, and connections with the existing bus and LRT network. The project is part of a wider programme to develop the city, with a new hospital also planned near the line terminus in Phase 2 of the project.
The line extension will meet the needs of residents and allow them to access a multitude of venues that previously were hard to reach. This marks an important milestone in the development and diversification of the city. This environmentally friendly project will bring significant improvements to the living conditions of its growing population. Construction is anticipated to start in 2024 and be completed tentatively in 2028.
