WestConnex is Australia’s largest tunnel road infrastructure project and is part of an integrated transport plan to keep Sydney moving; easing congestion, creating jobs and connecting communities. WestConnex is providing a vital missing link in Sydney’s motorway network and is supporting Sydney’s economic growth and urban revitalisation.
Fulton Hogan Egis, currently employing over 150 people at WestConnex, is extremely proud to provide asset management, incident response and maintenance services to this significant piece of city shaping infrastructure.
Rozelle Interchange, the final stage of WestConnex, is a new underground motorway interchange which links the M4 to the Anzac Bridge and the M8 to the City West Link and Victoria Road. Rozelle Interchange also provides a toll-free underground bypass of Victoria Road known as the Iron Cove Link, as well as built in connections to the future Western Harbour Tunnel project.
With the extensions of the M4 and M8 opening most recently, in January 2023, and now the final stage, the Rozelle Interchange, opening to traffic on 26th November 2023, the WestConnex network has become one of the longest integrated networks of underground motorways in the world!
WestConnex, through the recent opening of M4 and M8 extensions (known as the M4 – M8 link) has created a 33 kilometre continuous tunnel running from the M4 at Parramatta through to the M8 at Beverly Hills. Motorists using the WestConnex network can save up to 40 minutes off a journey between Parramatta and Mascot ), changing the way people move around Sydney.
Rozelle Interchange now provides an alternate route to the CBD for motorists from all over the Sydney Metropolitan area and beyond, namely the Northwest and Southwest, enhancing the western entry to the Sydney CBD, and in future an integrated network for the north too when the Western Harbour tunnel is completed.
Fulton Hogan Egis commenced pre-operations services in 2016 and has since mobilised 6 motorways into its services: the M4 West; the M4 East; the M5 East; M8, the M4 and M8 extensions and now the final piece of the puzzle, Rozelle Interchange.
This is the fourth tunnel opening in under five years, with a fifth also being absorbed into the WestConnex network in 2020: a phenomenal job to has been undertaken by Fulton Hogan Egis and Transurban to safely undertake many nights of multiple asset closures over many months to allow the commissioning of this tunnel, the final piece of the WestConnex network, all whilst in the operational context for the pre-existing stages.
